All About Georgetown's Red Poppy FestivalWhether you’re a native of Georgetown, Texas, or planning a visit to the area, you should definitely make a plan to attend the Red Poppy Festival. This fun event takes place in the town square and has something for everyone.

Parade with Floats and Bands

One of the main events of the Red Poppy Festival is the parade, which includes bands and floats. The parade will take place on April 25 starting at 10 a.m. You’ll see both the East View and Georgetown High School marching bands, color guards, and Georgettes. Every float and group of participants features the main hue of the event – red. Community and school organizations and local businesses are also included in the parade. The route includes Church Street, 9th Street, 5th Street, and Saustin Avenue.

Activities for the Kids

If you’re bringing kids to the Red Poppy Festival, they’ll have a number of activities to enjoy throughout the event. A coloring contest happens at the event, with prizes for those who create beautiful art pieces. The Red Poppy Kid’s Fun Zone is free to kids of all ages and features a large slide, an obstacle course, a bounce house, and a basketball game.

For younger kids, the toddler playground is the perfect spot to spend some time. The Kid’s Zone is open on Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Older can also take part in the Red Poppy Bike Ride, which happens a week before the parade. It begins at Richarte High School at 8 a.m.

Live Music

For many attendees, live music performances are the most appealing aspects of the annual festival. The event kicks off with a Friday night kickoff concert at 6 p.m. on April 24, featuring Tiffany Christopher and Dysfunkshun Junction. On Saturday, Tiffany Christopher will return to the stage, along with the Walburg Boys, Mega’Tune, Matthew McQueen, Dale Watson, and Mark Chesnutt. Live music performances on Sunday will include those by Chris Manning & the Southbound Drifters, Eric Hanke, and Angelyn & Blind Innocence.

Other Fun Happenings

Along with the live music, parade, and kid-themed activities, the Red Poppy Festival hosts a number of other happenings. The car show features vehicles from 1991 and earlier, all displayed in the town square. Each of the cars and trucks in the show is eligible to win an award, with options including Best Overall and the top 10.

In the booths, you can shop for handcrafted pieces from local artisans, including jewelry, art pieces, furniture, home decor, and more. A cooking competition celebrates all things related to the Red Poppy Festival and is open to cooks, bakers, and chefs of all backgrounds and skill levels. You can win a prize in either of the two categories – sweet or savory.

You can take part in the parade, classic car show, live music, or children’s areas when you attend the upcoming Red Poppy Festival. It’s a tradition among Georgetown locals and visitors, making it one of the most well-attended events of the year.
